providing biomass to improve soil fertility and health.

Additionally they have created a 4 acre permaculture field which is divided in sections using

shelterbelts of Whitethorn and in between planting of fruit producing trees and shrubs.

Another section of the farm consists of a 4 acre terraced Agroforestry plot which is planted

with soft fruit bushes surrounded by coppiced Willow, Birch and Sycamore.

  • Food Forest Farm Walk

    Hazel and Davi’s Wicklow Farm

    Ballardbeg, Co. Wicklow

    11th of May 2024

    12- 2 pm

    Registration is essential.

Davi and Hazel started planting their food forest in 2020. They are working the land using syntropic principles, mimicking the natural succession that would naturally occur over time. This is achieved by planting a diverse selection of plants at a relatively close spacing and using some of those as feeder plants by pruning them regularly and leaving the prunings on the ground to increase organic matter in the soil.

Their main objective is food production, for their own use. They have planted species like Alder, Apple, Currants, Poplar, Willow, Cobnuts and Plum to name just a few. There is no livestock within the food forest system, however a lot of the trees they have planted are palatable to livestock and the system could be used for livestock if some adjustments were made. This walk is especially interesting to those who wish to explore the possibilities a Food Forest system can provide in our climate.

The farm walk is funded by the Forestry Promotion Fund provided by the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine.
